A Luxury Guide to Exclusive Holidays in Gstaad

The luxury ski resort of Gstaad is one of the best-known holiday destinations in Switzerland. Idyllically situated in the Saanen Valley, Gstaad is a picture postcard Alpine village, complete with pedestrianised promenade, Swiss chalets, and a river framed by snow-capped mountains. The chic resort has always been a magnet for the international jet set with a host of royal visitors and celebrities frequenting its luxury hotels or having holiday homes in the area. It’s perhaps unsurprising that the village has been twinned with Cannes, and Louis Armstrong, Elizabeth Taylor, Sophia Loren, Julie Andrews and Roger Moore are just some of the visitors who have enjoyed its glamorous yet discreet lifestyle.

Naturally, Gstaad is also a haven for skiers and snowboarders alike. There are more than 130 miles of slopes and 144 pistes that cater for all levels of ability. The resort is also popular with non-skiers as there is a range of other activities on offer, including scenic walking trails. Those who prefer a more sedate holiday will appreciate the traffic-free promenade with its boutiques (Louis Vuitton, Ralph Lauren, Hermès, Prada are among those represented) and galleries, not to mention the fine dining options.

The heli-port conveniently allows you to arrive by luxury helicopter charter to Gstaad or go on an outing to one of the major cities in Switzerland’s neighbouring countries. It’s also possible to take a scenic helicopter flight or have an exclusive heli-skiing day.

Accommodation

Gstaad is a hotspot for five-star hotels, but one has legendary status. The Gstaad Palace dominates the skyline and has become an iconic landmark thanks to its outstanding architectural design and four gourmet restaurants, including Swiss inspired La Fromagerie. Le Grand Bellevue is another distinguished hotel; it channels the Belle Epoque era with a trendy twist and houses a Michelin-starred restaurant. Finally, the newest 5-star hotel in Gstaad is the cosmopolitan Alpina, which has the added benefit of being a very pet-friendly option.

Dining and Drinking

If you want a really traditional Swiss gourmet experience, Le Petit Chalet is a great choice. Located in the Grand Bellevue Hotel it serves mouth-watering raclette and fondue, but you need to book ahead as it only seats 18. The best meals with a view can be experienced at Restaurant Sonnenhof, where the emphasis is on fresh, seasonal ingredients, which can be enjoyed from their idyllic terrace. Bar Rialto doubles up as a restaurant and bar, the live music and wine selection makes it perfect for apres-ski relaxation. Alternatively, mingle with the glitterati for an unforgettable night in La Cave, the stylish bar owned by Formula 1 boss Bernie Ecclestone.
